Thor’s Day linkage

I’m still recovering from my stupid cold, so I’m short on bloggy love. But here are some good links, some fresh, some of which I’ve had in my “to blog” folder for waaaaay too long. Enjoy!

1. Moxie’s Manifesto – a good summation of why I love her site so damn much.

2. Pearl’s outtakes – if you liked the Will Ferrell short, you’ll also enjoy these outtakes, which make it clear just how much editing it took to make the original video.

3. Sweet Juniper’s Mythological Alphabet – damn, this is teh kewl. Urban meets classical on the interwebs.

4. Disney’s roving animatronic muppets – you have to watch the video on this one. It’s amazing. I’m not the hugest fan of Disney, but they sure nailed Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker.

5. IkeaHacker – a cool little site dedicated to showcasing the amazing, weird, and amazingly weird things people create out of humble Ikea products.

Thinking Blogger Awards!

Aw, shucks. Christopher gave me a Thinking Blogger award! I can’t imagine what my ramblings here would make anyone think, aside from maybe “this bitch is CRAZY,” but I guess that just goes to show you. Now that I’ve been tagged, I get to extend the award in turn to 5 blogs that “make me think.” Now, you’ve seen all the blogs on my blogroll, right? How am I supposed to pick just five? In the interests of spreading the love, I’m going to give my awards to blogs that are at least slightly off the beaten path (so, no Bitch or IBTP, though they make me think bunches). These are all blogs I check daily, and recommend highly. Here goes nothing!

1. Snickollet. She’s at the top of my mind right now, because she just lost her dear husband to cancer, and could also win the award for “person I don’t actually know who has made me cry the most.” Her posts are insightful, funny, honest, and sometimes tired and angry, and always worth a read.

2. Strict Time. Considers me her “blog mentor” (HA!) yet consistently outwrites me. I’d hate that, if she wasn’t so damn awesome all the time.

3. Sanctioning Agent. When I worked in corporate hell, any discussion of “branding” or other marketing speak just made me feel vaguely nauseated. Matt actually made me see what’s interesting about analyzing those topics, and his blog consistently – and humorously – calls out teh stupid in various campaigns.

4. My Skepsi. If you’d told me a year ago that one of my favorite blogs would be written by a self-declared christian living in a small town in Texas, I’d have said you were nuts. But what can I say? Her kid is damn cute, her posts are funny, and I steal widgets and code from her on a regular basis.

5. The Clutter Museum. Another parent blogger, Trillwing also blogs on feminism and academe, two of my favorite topics. Also, recently, strawberries, her rant on which is not to be missed.

Honorable Mentions (too “big” to be awarded): Ask Moxie and ParentHacks, two essential reads if you’re in the throes of parenthood.

I want! Want, want, want!

I’m a material girl. I admit it. I love me some stuff. But I mo-specially love clever, cute stuff. Which is why I’m sorta wishing I lived in the UK today (ok, let’s be honest: I always wish I were living in the UK), because HOLY CRAP is this some cute and clever stuff.

For instance, dig these rockin’ gender Tees:

I mean, how cool is that? And then there are these fairly stellar sets for daddy and baby:

I mean, hello! You are so getting a free beer with that combo!

But the one I really must have is this:

Seriously – even if you don’t have a kid, you gotta check out this site. Tewtelly. Ass-ome.

Good Stuff

Not having any postable thoughts today, so here are some other good reads/resources from across teh internets:

1. I just discovered GoCityKids. If you haven’t discovered it yet, check it out – it’s a great resource on kid-friendly places in a variety of big cities. The Minneapolis/St. Paul site is here, but there are also sites for Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, LA, and more.

2. The Fug Girls offer the definitive post on Brit and K-Fed’s breakup. (Dooce also has some good stuff to say.)

3. Dr. Bitch has been posting some most excellent thoughts on being a SAHM. Also be sure to check out the comments.

Enjoy!

Ships Ahoy!

It’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day, me hearties. Parent Hacks has a great set of links to pirate books and other paraphernalia to get your kids in the mood. Fun stuff.

Read ’ems

Three links for your delectation:

Twisty has an AWESOME post about female “empowerment.”

Shakes Sis wrote a really delightful short story about an unusual friendship.

Ask Moxie has a great set of recommendations on parenting books – what to get, and what to avoid. Wish I’d seen this advice when I was still pregs!

Linkage

The Hatchling is being a handful this week, so posting is difficult. But other people are writing some good stuff, like for instance:

Increasing evidence that even infrequent criticisms of a child’s weight can have lasting effects.

And two posts on Plan B, one from Bitch PhD, and one from my lurvely step-papa.

Enjoy.

Things wot are good to read

35 weeks today! Hoss’s head feels like it’s waaaaaaaay down in my twatular region. (Topher, that was specifically to make you do a spit take.)

So anyway … apropos of nothing, here’s some good stuff to read:

Ampersand has an excellent post up on how conservatives’ actions and positions speak louder than words when it comes to abortion. There’s a really neat chart and all! Useful for arguing with your local fundie.

At the American Prospect, Garance Franke-Ruta does an in-depth look at the NYT’s op-eds on abortion, pretty much putting paid to the notion that the Times is either ragingly liberal OR pro-choice. Good stuff.

And finally, I’m definitely feeling some grief bacon coming on. You heard me.
